Val Thorens, Europe’s highest ski resort and a key part of the vast Les 3 Vallées ski area, is renowned for its incredible slopes and breath-taking alpine scenery. But beyond the skiing, the resort has a culinary scene that runs from slope-side farm tables to Michelin stars. Here is where to eat in Val Thorens, on the mountain and off it.

On the mountain

1. Chez Pépé Nicolas

Location: On the slopes, between Val Thorens and Les Menuires

A working alpine farm turned mountain restaurant, and consistently the most talked-about table in the valley. Expect farm cheeses, slow-cooked meats and a terrace with a serious view. Book ahead in peak weeks.

2. La Fruitière, at La Folie Douce

Location: Top of the Plein Sud lift

The gastronomic brasserie inside the Alps’ most famous après venue, styled after a dairy cooperative. Come for a long lunch of signature dishes and stay as the tables around you start dancing.

3. Les Chalets du Thorens

Location: On the slopes, Moraine sector

Somewhere between mountain hut and pleasure dome: pizzas, sushi, grills and a live-music terrace that fills up from lunchtime. Easy to reach on skis, and worth planning a slow afternoon around.

4. Chalet de la Marine

Location: On the slopes, 2,500 metres

For a dining experience with a view, Chalet de la Marine is an absolute gem. Situated at 2,500 metres on the slopes, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a menu filled with local specialities and gourmet options. The sunny terrace is ideal for lunch on a beautiful day, while the cosy interior is perfect for colder afternoons.

6. L’Auberge des Balcons

Location: Les Balcons Area

L’Auberge des Balcons offers a true alpine dining experience with stunning views over Val Thorens. Situated in the Les Balcons area, this restaurant specialises in Savoyard cuisine, and after a day on the slopes there’s nothing better than warming up with a hearty meal in this atmospheric setting.

• Must-Try: The tartiflette is a local favourite, along with the cheese fondue. If you’re in the mood for something unique, try the pierrade (stone-grilled meats).

7. Le Zinc

Location: Val Thorens Centre

Val Thorens’ Michelin-starred flagship. A tasting-menu experience at 2,300 metres for the one properly special evening of your week. Reservations essential.

Location: Hôtel Pashmina

In the same hotel as Les Explorateurs, La Laiterie specialises in modern twists on traditional alpine dishes, with a creative menu that highlights the flavours of the Savoie region. The cosy, contemporary atmosphere makes it perfect for those looking to try something a little different.

• Must-Try: The melted Beaufort cheese with potatoes and ham is a delicious take on a classic alpine dish. The lamb shank with polenta is also a must-try.
