Nestled in the heart of the French Alps, La Plagne is one of Europe’s most popular ski destinations – and for good reason. With its vast and varied terrain, reliable snowfall, and charming alpine villages, this expansive resort has something for everyone, whether you’re racing down the pistes or relaxing with a vin chaud by the fire.

Where is La Plagne?

La Plagne is located in the Savoie region of the French Alps and forms part of the vast Paradiski area, which it shares with Les Arcs. With altitudes ranging from 1,250 to 3,250 metres and access to two glaciers, it offers exceptionally snow-sure conditions throughout the season. The resort is made up of several interconnected villages, including Plagne Centre, Belle Plagne, Plagne 1800, and Montchavin, each with its own distinctive atmosphere. Our catered ski chalet is located in the beautiful village of Plagne 1800, giving you the perfect base to explore everything this iconic resort has to offer.

The history of the resort

La Plagne’s history is deeply rooted in the rugged traditions of the Tarentaise Valley, where generations of mountain communities relied on alpine farming, cheese-making, and mining to sustain their livelihoods. Life here was shaped by the rhythm of the seasons and the challenges of high-altitude living. By the mid-20th century, however, these traditional industries were in decline, and many feared that the valley’s remote villages would slowly be abandoned.

In response, the local community launched an ambitious plan to reinvent the region through mountain tourism. In 1961, the first ski lift in La Plagne was installed in what is now Plagne Centre, marking the birth of the resort. This bold initiative was not just about building a few lifts – it was a visionary project to create purpose-built villages designed specifically for ski holidays, with convenient access to the slopes and all the amenities needed for modern alpine living.

Over the decades, La Plagne has continued to evolve, embracing innovation while respecting the natural beauty and heritage of the region. From expanding into new high-altitude areas to connecting with neighbouring Les Arcs via the Vanoise Express cable car – one of the world’s largest – the resort has solidified its place as a major player in the French Alps.

The Skiing Experience

Skiers and snowboarders are drawn to La Plagne for its expansive and diverse terrain. As part of the Paradiski area, linked with Les Arcs by the Vanoise Express cable car, it offers over 425km of pistes suited to all levels. Beginners can build confidence on the wide, gentle slopes around Plagne Centre and Belle Plagne, while more advanced riders will find thrilling black runs, off-piste routes, and challenging descents from the Bellecôte glacier.

What makes La Plagne especially appealing is the variety of landscapes across its 11 interlinked villages. From the high-altitude snowfields above Aime 2000 to the scenic, tree-lined runs down to Montchavin and Champagny-en-Vanoise, the resort offers a mix of terrain, reliable snow, and breath taking views – perfect for long, uninterrupted days on the mountain.

Apres Ski and Nightlife

La Plagne’s après-ski scene is lively, welcoming, and full of character. At the heart of it all is La Bergerie, perched just above Plagne Centre. By afternoon, this mountain restaurant transforms into a high-altitude party spot with live DJs, saxophone sets, table dancing, and panoramic views – all just a final ski down from home.

For a more intimate yet buzzing atmosphere, Le Bonnet in Plagne Bellecote is a favourite among those in the know. Stylish and friendly, it offers expertly crafted cocktails, local wines, and a warm, low-lit interior perfect for unwinding in style.

Meanwhile, just down from our chalet in Plagne 1800, Bar La Mine combines cosy chalet vibes with a lively bar scene. Set in a building styled after a traditional mine shaft, it’s a quirky and welcoming spot where you’ll find live music, themed nights, and a great mix of locals, seasonnaires, and visitors alike.

Where to Eat

Dining in La Plagne is as varied and satisfying as a day on its slopes. For an authentic Alpine experience, Le Refuge in Plagne Centre is a longtime favourite, serving up classic Savoyard fare like gooey raclette, bubbling fondue, and rich tartiflette in a cosy, timber-clad setting.

For something more contemporary, head to Le Loup Blanc in Plagne 1800, where traditional French cuisine meets modern presentation and bold flavours. With elegant décor and attentive service, it’s perfect for a special evening out.

And if you’re in search of the best pizza in the resort, La Cantine in Plagne 1800 hits the spot. Beloved for its laid-back atmosphere and generous, wood-fired creations, it’s the ideal place to refuel after a long day on the mountain.

Beyond the slopes

While skiing and snowboarding are the main draws, La Plagne offers a wide array of activities for those looking to experience the mountains in a different way. Adventurous visitors can try bobsleighing on the Olympic track in La Roche – a high-speed, adrenaline-filled ride that’s truly one of a kind. For a more tranquil experience, moonlit snowshoe hikes and dog sledding provide a magical way to explore the alpine scenery off the beaten path.

Families and non-skiers will love the Spa and Pool Complex in Belle Plagne, which features a swimming pool, wellness area, and treatments for post-ski relaxation.

The Ultimate Guide to Skiing in La Plagne

La Plagne is more than just a ski resort – it’s a full-spectrum alpine experience that blends adventure, relaxation, and authentic mountain charm. Nestled in the heart of the Paradiski area, it offers an incredible 425km of skiable terrain across a network of high-altitude peaks, wooded valleys, and traditional villages, all connected by a modern and efficient lift system. With its impressive range of pistes and excellent snow reliability, La Plagne caters effortlessly to everyone – from complete beginners to expert skiers, freeriders, and families.

But La Plagne’s appeal goes far beyond the slopes. Its 11 diverse villages each offer their own atmosphere – from the lively après-ski of Plagne Centre to the peaceful, picturesque streets of Montchavin. Off the mountain, there’s just as much to enjoy: ride the Olympic bobsleigh track, unwind in a spa, savour Savoyard specialties by a roaring fire, or explore the landscape on a snowshoe trail or dog sled.

Whether you’re here for high-altitude thrills, serene alpine views, or long lunches with raclette and vin chaud, La Plagne offers a winter holiday that’s as rich and varied as the mountains themselves. It’s a destination that welcomes everyone – powder hounds, first-timers, families, foodies, and everyone in between – and delivers unforgettable memories, season after season.
