When it comes to skiing, the highest ski resorts in Europe offer some of the most snow-sure conditions, stunning views, and exhilarating terrain. Ski resorts perched at the highest elevations often benefit from longer seasons, making them popular destinations for both December and Easter skiing. Whether you’re a powder hound chasing fresh snow or looking for wide, sun-drenched pistes, high altitude skiing offers a unique skiing experience above the clouds.
Let’s explore the highest ski resorts in Europe, offering a mix of world-class skiing, snowboarding, and spectacular mountain scenery.
Sitting at an impressive altitude of 2,300 meters, Val Thorens proudly holds the title of the highest ski resort in Europe. Nestled in the heart of the renowned Les 3 Vallées ski area—the largest interconnected ski domain in the world—it offers an unparalleled skiing experience with seamless access to over 600 km of slopes. Whether you’re a beginner taking your first turns or an experienced skier looking for thrilling descents, the variety of pistes ensures there’s something for everyone.
One of Val Thorens’ biggest advantages is its altitude, which guarantees excellent snow conditions throughout the season. With ski runs stretching as high as 3,230 meters, it’s one of the most snow-sure resorts in the Alps. The extended season typically runs from late November to early May, giving skiers and snowboarders plenty of time to enjoy pristine powder and well-groomed slopes. Thanks to its high elevation as the highest ski resorts in Europe and state-of-the-art snowmaking facilities, you can count on fantastic conditions from the first snowfall to the last.
Beyond its impressive ski terrain, Val Thorens is also known for its breath taking alpine views, modern lift system, and lively atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination for any winter sports enthusiast. Whether you’re here for the skiing, the après-ski, or simply the stunning mountain scenery, Val Thorens delivers an unforgettable experience at every turn.
As part of the expansive Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area, Tignes is a high-altitude favourite among skiers and snowboarders, standing proudly alongside its neighbouring resort, Val d’Isère. Known for its impressive elevation and vast terrain, Tignes offers an exceptional winter sports experience with slopes that climb as high as 3,456 meters at the summit of the iconic Grande Motte Glacier. This altitude ensures excellent snow reliability throughout the season, making it a top choice for those seeking consistent, high-quality skiing conditions.
One of the biggest draws of Tignes, as one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, is its long ski season, which typically stretches from October to May – one of the longest in the Alps. Thanks to the presence of the Grande Motte Glacier, skiing isn’t just limited to the winter months. The glacier remains accessible even in the warmer months, allowing for summer skiing, making Tignes a rare year-round ski destination. Whether you’re carving fresh tracks in the depths of winter or enjoying sunny runs in the off-season, Tignes offers a unique and thrilling experience for all levels.
Beyond its world-class slopes, Tignes is also known for its modern lift system, vibrant après-ski scene, and variety of activities beyond skiing, including ice diving, dog sledding, and snowshoeing. With its combination of high-altitude reliability, extensive ski terrain, and lively atmosphere, Tignes continues to be a must-visit resort for snow enthusiasts seeking adventure, and as one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, you can enjoy it at any time of the year.
Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area, this prestigious resort has earned a reputation as one of the finest destinations for winter sports, attracting skiers and snowboarders from across the globe. The combination of being one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a rich skiing heritage makes it a must-visit for snow enthusiasts of all levels.
Val d’Isère is particularly well-known for its challenging terrain, making it a favourite among expert skiers and thrill-seekers. From legendary black runs to steep off-piste descents, the resort offers no shortage of adrenaline-pumping experiences. However, it’s not just for advanced riders—there are also plenty of well-groomed pistes and beginner-friendly areas, making it an excellent choice for mixed-ability groups.
Snow reliability is another key highlight, with consistent snowfall and an extended season that typically runs from late November to early May. It is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe and the resort’s modern lift system ensures quick and easy access to its vast ski area, while the charming alpine village provides a welcoming atmosphere once you’re off the slopes.
Beyond skiing, Val d’Isère’s lively après-ski scene is second to none. Whether you’re unwinding with a drink at a cosy mountain bar, dancing at legendary après-ski venues, or indulging in gourmet cuisine at one of its many fine dining restaurants, the resort offers a vibrant social scene to complement its world-class skiing. With its perfect blend of thrilling slopes, reliable snow, and an electric atmosphere, Val d’Isère continues to be one of Europe’s most iconic ski destinations.
Perched at an altitude of 1,850 meters, with chalets, bars, and restaurants scattered at even greater heights, Les Menuires is a fantastic destination for skiers and snowboarders looking to explore the vast terrain of Les 3 Vallées. Offering access to an incredible 600 km of pistes and an impressive 180 lifts, this resort provides seamless connectivity to the largest and most renowned ski area in the world.
Les Menuires stands out as a quieter, more family-oriented alternative to some of its livelier neighbours, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The resort is well-suited for skiers of all levels, with a mix of gentle slopes for beginners, wide cruising runs for intermediates, and challenging descents for more experienced riders. The modern lift system ensures quick access to the wider Les 3 Vallées ski domain, allowing visitors to easily explore legendary resorts such as Val Thorens, Méribel, and Courchevel.
Beyond skiing, Les Menuires has plenty to offer as one of Europe’s highest ski resorts. Claire Harris2025-04-19 Just returned from the most fabulous week in Tignes staying at Chalet Isabelle. As a family group of 10 this Chalet accommodated us perfectly, with 5 en-suite bedrooms, fantastic dining/lounge area with snug, hot tub room and adjoining ski/boot room, all made for a very comfortable stay. We were very lucky to have the wonderful Joe as our Chalet host. If I could rate higher than 5 stars just for Joe I would! What an amazing young man! 5* service from the minute we arrived - we arrived to the best coffee and walnut cake prepared for us and everything just got better and better as the week went on - hosting skills just excellent and always great company, making our stay extra memorable! The Chalet is in a great location - piste can be accessed opposite and if beginners, for ski school the bus stop just outside, just one stop gets you there. It was unreal to have experienced a late season snow storm whilst there too - over 1.5m of snow in 24hrs, the resort completely closed and all roads blocked! But everything opened the next day and the pistes were awesome! So thank you Ski Vertigo and in particular the amazing Joe for making our family trip so memorable ❤️🤩 Sian Manning2025-04-03 We have booked with Ski Vertigo and Ski Famille many times and have never been disappointed. This time we stayed at Chalet Isobelle in Tignes Le Lavachet. The day before our flight Heathrow was closed. Thankyou to the team at Ski Vertigo we still got to our destination and had a great week in a beautiful chalet with superb food and great hosting. Vicky Justice2025-04-03 Can’t recommend enough! We just arrived home from the best weeks stay at Chalet Sapin with our party of 11. We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived. The chalet is in a fab location, ski in ski out, right beside esf ski school & with lots of space for our teenage crew to spread out! Wonderfully comfy beds, pristine facilities, stunning food & the best hosts we could have wished for. Shout out to Aurelia, Izzy & Alice. It really was a dream week in the sun & snow. Can’t wait for January! julie smith2025-03-18 Perfect place to stay Sam F2025-03-18 The entire team at ski vertigo was amazing! Truly top notch service from a welcoming chalet staff that felt like family. We stayed at Chalet Vega over NYE and we are still talking about our trip 3 months later. Our group visited from Texas, and this was unlike any experience you can find in the states. Will be back for sure! Special shoutout to Dave, Georgia and Ben for taking great care of us. Dave even went toe-to-toe with the manager at British Airways to get us on a different flight after finding out our departure flight was delayed and we were in jeopardy of missing our connection. Absolute over the top service until the moment we left France. Can't thank you guys enough! Hope to see you again soon!
