Nestled high in the French Alps, Tignes is one of Europe’s most beloved ski destinations – and for good reason. With guaranteed snow, an extensive ski area, and a buzzing après-ski scene, this high-altitude resort offers something for everyone, whether you’re carving down the slopes or sipping vin chaud by the fire.

Where is Tignes?

Tignes is located in the Savoie region of the French Alps, forming part of the renowned Tignes-Val d’Isere ski area alongside Val d’Isère. At an altitude ranging from 1,550 to 3,456 metres, it offers some of the most snow-sure skiing in the Alps. The resort is made up of several villages, the main ones being Tignes Le Lac, Val Claret, Lavachet, and Les Brévières, each with its own unique character. Our catered ski chalets are situated throughout the villages, to offer you the best experience of this iconic resort.

The history of the resort

Tignes’ history is as dramatic as its mountain landscape. The original village was flooded in 1952 to create the Lac du Chevril hydroelectric dam – a monumental project in post-war France. Today, the old village lies submerged beneath the lake, while the modern resort was rebuilt higher up the mountain. Since then, Tignes has grown into a pioneering destination known for its innovation, including being one of the first to embrace year-round glacier skiing.

The Skiing Experience

Skiers and snowboarders flock to Tignes for its vast and varied terrain. The Tignes – Val d’Isere area boasts over 300km of pistes, catering to all skill levels. Beginners can enjoy gentle nursery slopes around Tignes Le Lac and Lavachet, while advanced skiers will find challenging black runs, off-piste adventures, and access to the infamous La Face run in neighbouring Val d’Isère.

What truly sets this stunning resort apart is its altitude. Thanks to the Grande Motte glacier, snow conditions are reliable even in early and late season. Whether you’re lapping high-speed runs in Val Claret or venturing to the scenic tree-lined slopes of Les Brévières, you’re guaranteed long, uninterrupted runs and spectacular alpine views.

Après Ski and Nightlife

Tignes doesn’t sleep once the lifts close. Après-ski in Tignes ranges from laid-back to legendary. At the heart of the party scene is Cocorico, an open-air après bar that delivers live music, dancing on tables, and flowing drinks from mid-afternoon until sunset. For something a little wilder, Loop Bar in Tignes Le Lac is a favourite among seasonnaires and partygoers, known for its DJ sets and happy hour deals.

If you’re after a more relaxed vibe, head to Grizzly’s Bar in Val Claret, where the crackling fire and cosy mountain-lodge aesthetic offer the perfect spot to unwind with a local beer or hot chocolate.

Where to Eat

Dining in Tignes is as diverse as its terrain. For a true taste of the Alps, La Ferme des Trois Capucines is a must-visit. Set in an authentic working farm, this rustic restaurant serves up hearty Savoyard dishes like raclette, tartiflette, and fondue, all made with local ingredients.

Craving something modern and creative? L’Arti, located in Tignes Le Lac, combines French flair with international influences, offering beautifully plated dishes in a chic setting. And for the best pizza on the mountain, Tignes Cuisine is a hidden gem beloved for its casual vibe and flavour-packed menu.

Beyond the Slopes

While skiing and snowboarding are the main attractions, Tignes offers a wide range of other activities for those looking to mix things up. Try ice diving in the frozen lake – an exhilarating experience that’s not for the faint-hearted – or take a moonlit snowshoe trek through the quiet alpine landscape.

Families and non-skiers will enjoy the Lagoon Leisure Centre, which houses a swimming pool, gym, and wellness area, perfect for a rest day. For thrill-seekers, the Bun J Ride combines ski jumping, bungee jumping, and ziplining into one heart-pounding adventure.

The ultimate guide to Tignes

Tignes is more than just a ski resort – it’s a complete alpine experience. With its high-altitude snow reliability, expansive terrain, dynamic après-ski, and wide range of activities, it’s easy to see why it remains a firm favourite for winter enthusiasts from around the world.

Whether you’re a powder hound, a first-timer, or just there for the fondue, Tignes delivers an unforgettable mountain escape every single time.
